Course Overview
How do you determine when a child needs a hand splint, and how can you fabricate one that supports function and prevents deformities?
This expert-level course provides a practical framework for assessing hand function in children with neurological conditions and making evidence-based decisions about splinting. You’ll learn how contractures and deformities develop, how to evaluate movement restrictions, and when splinting is clinically appropriate.
Building on this knowledge, the course guides you through the fabrication of a night hand splint using practical techniques and appropriate materials. You’ll also review the latest scientific evidence to justify clinical decisions and effectively communicate treatment recommendations to parents, physicians, and funding organisations.
Practical Application
- Assessment of hand function in neuropaediatric patients
- Prevention of contractures and deformities
- Clinical decision-making for hand splint prescription
- Fabrication of custom night hand splints
- Communicating treatment recommendations to families and healthcare professionals
- Evidence-based splinting in clinical practice
What you will learn
- Understand the anatomical principles relevant to hand splinting
- Assess movement restrictions and distinguish structural changes
- Perform a comprehensive clinical assessment for splinting
- Decide when a hand splint is indicated
